National Dialogue and peacemaking

________________________________________________________________________________
Over the last two decades, National Dialogues have been increasingly recognised as a comprehensive tool for preventing violent conflicts and reaching inclusive political settlements. They have the potential to provide societies with a platform to address social, political and economic issues as nationally owned political processes with the aim of generating consensus.
National Dialogues are the beginning of a journey to embark on a new social contract - these are essentially political processes, often grounded in realpolitik and political calculations and require multiple spaces and arenas to resolve the issues at stake. - Luxshi Vimalarajah, Senior Mediation Advisor, Berghof Foundation
At Berghof, we have been providing tools and resources on the topic over the span of many years to support various National Dialogue processes. Join our “National Dialogue and peacemaking” online course starting this September to learn how to prepare, conduct and implement National Dialogues. Make sure to apply by 31 July!

To find out more, check out our “National Dialogue Handbook” grounded in a series of contemporary case studies with the aim of bringing together insights and expertise from diverse regions. You can also take a look at our “National Dialogues at crossroads” publication series, accompanied by online public events, where we addressed the gap of how National Dialogues can meaningfully incorporate issues such as climate change, digitalisation and protest movements.

National Dialogue Handbook

Our National Dialogue Handbook seeks to offer practical advice to both local and international conflict stakeholders and practitioners on how to grapple with the challenges they face and which design to pursue based on their contexts. It also aims to provide an overview of National Dialogue processes based on the expertise of scholars and implementers.

National Dialogues at crossroads
At the launch event of the paper “National Dialogues x Climate Change”, experts explored whether National Dialogues may be one mechanism to address climate-related social change, mitigate vulnerability and enhance resilience.
Launching the paper “National Dialogues x Digitalisation”, our event explored how digitalisation shapes National Dialogues and vice versa, including assessing both the risks and opportunities of using digital technologies in the preparation and conduction of National Dialogues.
During our event launching the paper “National Dialogues x Protest Movements”, experts and practitioners discussed dilemmas around the timing for National Dialogue implementation. They addressed new platforms that can ensure societal engagement after dialogue processes are over to allow for inclusive change.
