More than 60 years now, VPC has worked tirelessly with Victorian school parents. That we are still here today is a testament to the hard work and support of parents, schools and parent associations across Victoria.
We are a not-for-profit, ACNC registered Charity Organisation and are driven by the commitment of a small group of volunteers.
You can be involved as a parent, guardian, school, teacher or business; we love to collaborate with all those who are passionate about supporting children through education, from babies through to adulthood and beyond.

WELCOME TO THE FIRST VPC E-NEWS 2022

Dear VPC Community,

We were all relieved to see the start to the school year underway with sensible measures in place. Parents are very keen to see school go back to as normal as possible. There is still some uncertainty and we are very conscious of the impact the last two years have had on our children, their education and family life. In 2022 VPC will continue to represent the interests of all parents, and parents with children in non-government schools. We provide a rich program of activities and publications to support parents in these challenging times. We look forward to another successful year.

Now more than ever parents need to step up to be the advocates for their children. VPC is only as good as the membership and involvement of parents in our sector. We welcome your involvement and contribution. Parents who are interested in working with us should contact us.

RESEARCH
VPC proactively seeks out research opportunities that will benefit our membership and parents. We are proud to be community partners in the following research:
VPC is a community partner for an Australia-wide study being run through the School of Social Marketing at Griffith University. The project is researching the changes in resilience and wellbeing post-pandemic. This research aims to understand the current levels of resilience in the general adult population in Australia. Responding to School Reluctance and Refusal – Strategies for Parents  
Glenn Melvin, Associate Professor at Deakin University

Most children will be reluctant to attend school at some point during their school years. For others, reluctance persists and interrupts family life, while others miss out on school due to a refusal to attend. This situation can be highly stressful for parents. This presentation will start by providing an understanding of school reluctance and refusal and what might underlie these behaviours.

Practical strategies that parents can put into place to support children and teens who are reluctant or refuse to attend school will be described.  

VPC Community Updates

VRQA - Victorian Registration and Qualifications Authority
The VRQA have recently published the new Ministerial Order No. 1359 – Implementing the Child Safe Standard -- Managing the risk of child abuse in schools and school boarding premises. It sets out how schools and school boarding premises will have to implement Victoria’s new Child Safe Standards when they commence on 1 July 2022.

For parents of an apprentice or trainee a new Operational Working Group has been set up recently, chaired by the VRQA.  It aims to mitigate the risk of harm to Victorian apprentices and trainees and recent examples of employers that have had their approval to train apprentices taken away.

NAPLAN update                    
The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is moving to online assessment. It is anticipated that all schools will complete NAPLAN Online in May 2022.
